Fr. Theodosios Ilunga:> Country: Democratic Republic of Congo> Hierarch: His Eminence Metropolitan Meletios> Diocese: Metropolis of Katanga
Fr. Theodosios Ilunga was born in Kaniama on February 22, 1985. He was ordained to the priesthood on August 28, 2011. He currently serves the parish of St.Theodore in Musonoie.The missionary work of the Metropolis of Katanga began to flourish in 1976 with the energetic +Fr. Kosmas, a monk at the Monastery of St. Gregory on Mount Athos. The latter worked very hard for 12 years to establish and activate the whole work of a mission center. Tragically, Fr. Kosmas died in 1988 in a car accident. He was succeeded by another monk from St. Gregory’s, Fr. Meletios, who in 1989 was sent to Kolwezi, where he undertook the leadership of the already-functioning mission center, succeeding Fr. Kosmas. On November 1, 2006, Patriarchal and Synodal Decree established the new Diocese of Kolwezi and elected Fr. Meletios to serve as the first bishop of this new diocese; in 2009, the diocese’s name was changed to the Diocese of Katanga, and in 2014 the diocese was elevated to a metropolis. The Metropolis encompasses the vast province of Katanga, an area larger than the state of California. More than 75 clergy serve in this Metropolis, and, thanks to our generous supporters, OCMC’s SAMP program provides regular financial support for 45 of them.

In 1932, a former Methodist minister, Kwamin Ntsetse Bresi-Ando, founded a new church in Ghana. Preaching freedom for the Ghanaian people during the days of colonialism, his vision was for a new church that would be both apostolic and canonical, not a version of a foreign church. He named his church the African Universal (Orthodox-Catholic) Church. In 1974, the World Council of Churches held a meeting in Accra, Ghana, where two of the youth from Bresi-Ando’s church met two Orthodox Christian priests from the United States, Frs. John Meyendorff and Thomas Hopko, of blessed memory, who were attending the meeting. This contact proved to be a major turning point and the necessary impetus towards the canonical reception of Bresi-Ando’s Ghanaian church community into the jurisdiction of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria. Fr. Kwame Joseph Labi was one of those two youth at the 1974 World Council of Churches meeting. He obtained a Master of Divinity degree from St. Vladimir’s Seminary in New York and was ordained to the priesthood in 1982. Fr. Kwame serves as Vicar General for the Archdiocese and also serves at the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral in Accra. In September 2007, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria created a new diocese for Ghana; in 2009, it was elevated to the present-day Archdiocese of Accra. In addition to Ghana, this archdiocese includes Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Mali. His Eminence Petros (Parginos), a native of South Africa, was consecrated as Metropolitan of Accra in December 2019.
