Γιορτάζοντας την Πρωτοχρονιά σε μια εμπόλεμη ζώνη ( Σιέρα Λεόνε ).Celebrating the New Year in a War Zone ( Siera Leone )

Με εξαίρεση τις εκκλησιαστικές ακολουθίες, όλος ο πληθυσμός της Σιέρρα Λεόνε διατάχθηκε να μείνει στο σπίτι κατά τη διάρκεια των διακοπών των Χριστουγέννων και της Πρωτοχρονιάς. Αυτή τη στιγμή είμαστε σε μια κατάσταση μερικού αποκλεισμού για την περίοδο των γιορτών. Ούτε εστιατόρια, ούτε αθλητικά γεγονότα, ούτε υπαίθριοι εορτασμοί, ούτε γαμήλιες δεξιώσεις, ούτε δημόσιοι πανηγυρισμοί. Όλα τα καταστήματα πρέπει να κλείνουν στις 6 μ.μ. τις καθημερινές και στις 12 το μεσημέρι των Σαββάτων, ενώ δεν ανοίγουν καθόλου τις Κυριακές. Ακόμη και οι εκκλησιαστικές ακολουθίες ήταν περιορισμένες – έπρεπε να τελεστούν κατά τη διάρκεια της ημέρας και μόνο μέχρι τις 5 το απόγευμα. Οι ακολουθίες την ημέρα της Πρωτοχρονιάς ήταν απαγορευμένες. Πράγματι, ο στρατός μαζί με περιπόλους εθελοντών βρίσκεται στους δρόμους για να εξασφαλίσει την εφαρμογή των διαταγμάτων αυτών. Οι παραβάτες θα αντιμετωπίσουν τις ποινές του νόμου. Και σε αυτό τον κατάλογο απαγορεύσεων, προσθέστε και την παρακολούθηση μαθημάτων στα σχολεία, κολλέγια και πανεπιστήμια.

Γιατί; Βιώνουμε κάποιου είδους αντιχριστιανική εκστρατεία που υποκινείται από το κράτος; Όχι! Τότε γιατί όλα αυτά τα δρακόντεια μέτρα κατά τη διάρκεια των Αγίων Εορτών – ή μάλλον επ” αόριστον και μέχρι νεωτέρας διαταγής; Η απλή όσο και τραγική απάντηση είναι ότι αυτό το έθνος βρίσκεται και πάλι σε πόλεμο.

Όπως και άλλες δέκα φορές κατά τη διάρκεια των τελευταίων είκοσι χρόνων, αυτό το έθνος βρίσκεται και πάλι σε πόλεμο κατά τη διάρκεια των Χριστουγέννων, της Πρωτοχρονιάς, των Θεοφανίων. Αλλά αυτή τη φορά δεν υπάρχουν AK47 και σφαίρες να σκοτώνουν αθώους ανθρώπους. Αυτή τη φορά δεν υπάρχουν αντάρτικες ομάδες να εισβάλλουν στις πόλεις και τα χωριά και να ακρωτηριάζουν αδιακρίτως χέρια και πόδια. Αυτή τη φορά ο εχθρός δεν κάνει ερωτήσεις, δεν παίρνει αιχμαλώτους και δεν κάνει καμία εξαίρεση στο φονικό ξέσπασμά του – βρέφη, νήπια, έφηβοι, ενήλικες και ηλικιωμένοι ζουν όλοι κάτω από τη σκιά του επικείμενου θανάτου.

• Αυτή η φορά δεν έχει έλεος.
• Αυτή τη φορά ο εχθρός είναι σιωπηλός, αόρατος και πιο φονικός.
• Αυτή τη φορά δεν μπορούν να υπάρξουν ανακωχή ή συνθήκες. Ή κερδίζεις ή χάνεις.
• Αυτή τη φορά ο εχθρός δεν είναι το Ενωμένο Επαναστατικό Μέτωπο που ακρωτηριάζει ανθρώπους!
• Αυτή τη φορά ο εχθρός είναι ένας ανίατος μικροσκοπικός ιός που προξενεί ένα φοβερό και θανάσιμο αιμορραγικό πυρετό!
• Αυτή τη φορά, οι σειρήνες των ασθενοφόρων τσιρίζουν συνεχώς σκορπίζοντας μακάβριους φόβους!
• Αυτή τη φορά ο εχθρός ονομάζεται Έμπολα!

Γι” αυτό το λόγο, η Κυβέρνηση διέταξε όλοι οι εορτασμοί των Χριστουγέννων και της Πρωτοχρονιάς να ακυρωθούν, ώστε να αποφευχθεί η συνάθροιση πλήθους ανθρώπων σε κλειστούς χώρους και έτσι να περιοριστεί ο κίνδυνος σωματικής επαφής – της βασικής πηγής μόλυνσης από Έμπολα.

Όταν πρωτάκουσα αυτό το νέο διάταγμα, η αρχική ενστικτώδης αντίδρασή μου ήταν αρνητική. Αλλά μετά ξανασκέφτηκα την κατάσταση από μια καθαρά πνευματική σκοπιά. Ποιο είναι το πραγματικό νόημα των εορτασμών των Χριστουγέννων, της Πρωτοχρονιάς και των Θεοφανίων; Είναι να χορεύεις μεθυσμένος στους δρόμους; Είναι τα άγρια πάρτι; Είναι το αλκοόλ και οι άλλες μορφές μέθης; Είναι να μπεκρουλιάζεις όλη νύχτα; Ή όπως συνηθίζεται εδώ στη Σιέρρα Λεόνε, είναι οι ολοήμερες και ολονύχτιες παρελάσεις στους δρόμους από τους ιθαγενείς που αυτοαποκαλούνται «Χορευτές του Διαβόλου»;

Ίσως αυτά τα σκληρά μέτρα να είναι μια μεταμφιεσμένη ακούσια ευλογία. Απαγορεύοντας όλα τα αχρείαστα εμπορικά και αντιπνευματικά φτιασίδια από τα Χριστούγεννα, την Πρωτοχρονιά και τα Θεοφάνια, η Σιέρρα Λεόνε έχει τώρα την ευκαιρία – αν και απρόθυμα – να εστιάσει περισσότερο στις οικογενειακές συναθροίσεις παρά στα οχλαγωγικά υπαίθρια πάρτι. Έχει την ευκαιρία να αναλογιστεί περισσότερο το πραγματικό νόημα του γεγονότος της Βηθλεέμ, της άφιξης του Νέου Έτους ή των Θεοφανίων με έναν τρόπο πνευματικό και όχι με τις ιθαγενείς «διαβολοχορευτικές» παρελάσεις. Έτσι, στο φως της παρούσας επιδημίας Έμπολα, υπάρχει η ελπίδα να σκεφτεί βαθύτερα πάνω στα θέματα που σχετίζονται με την προσωπική σωματική υγιεινή και πνευματική υγεία. Πράγματι, παράλληλα με αυτά τα μέτρα, ο Πρόεδρος της Σιέρρα Λεόνε έχει συστήσει μια εβδομάδα εθνικής προσευχής και νηστείας μετά την Πρωτοχρονιά ως μια μετα-φυσική εκστρατεία κατά του Έμπολα.

Αντιλαμβάνομαι ότι πολλοί από εσάς εκτός Δυτικής Αφρικής, που διαβάζετε αυτό το μήνυμα, αντιμετωπίζετε επίσης πολλές δυσκολίες. Όλοι ζούμε σε έναν κόσμο αποκαλυπτικά αυξανόμενης πολιτικής, οικονομικής, περιβαλλοντικής και ιατρικής αβεβαιότητας – ανίατες θανατηφόρες επιδημίες και λοιμοί, πόλεμοι και θηριώδης βία, μικρά παιδιά που στρατολογούνται και μετατρέπονται σε μηχανές που σκοτώνουν, μαζικοί εκτοπισμοί προσφύγων, καταστροφικές πυρκαγιές και ακόμη-ακόμη το φάσμα του πυρηνικού πολέμου να αχνοπροβάλει στον ορίζοντα απειλητικά σε ένα σκηνικό Νέου Ψυχρού Πολέμου. Όλες αυτές οι αναταράξεις απειλούν το λεπτότατο και εύθραυστο τσόφλι του παγκόσμιου πολιτισμού μας. Και σαν να μην ήμασταν ευχαριστημένοι με την ακατάπαυστη δίψα μας για εξουσία και χρήμα, μολύνουμε ανεύθυνα τα νερά μας και υποβαθμίζουμε το φυσικό μας περιβάλλον, θέτοντας σε κίνδυνο ακόμη και το ίδιο το οξυγόνο που αναπνέουμε. Και το τελευταίο καρφί στον αρνητισμό μας; Οι παραδοσιακές ηθικές αξίες και οι αγιογραφικές αλήθειες θεωρούνται ξεπερασμένες σε έναν κόσμο που έχει την εμμονή να διαστρέφει και να ανακηρύσσει το άδικο ως δικαιοσύνη.

Αλλά δε χάθηκαν όλα!

Εμείς οι Χριστιανοί είμαστε τώρα πιο απαραίτητοι από ποτέ, για να διακηρύξουμε και να μείνουμε προσηλωμένοι στις αιώνιες και αμετάβλητες αλήθειες της Αγίας Γραφής.

• Ας προσπαθήσουμε να ζήσουμε αυτό το Νέο Χρόνο με αγιότητα και υπακοή στο Χριστό!
• Ας γίνουμε ειρηνοποιοί.
• Και ας βοηθήσουμε τους δυστυχισμένους!
• Με άλλα λόγια, ας επαναφέρουμε το αυθεντικό νόημα αυτών των Αγίων Ημερών στη ζωή μας.

Εσείς, που βοηθήσατε και συνεχίζετε να βοηθάτε την Ορθόδοξη Ιεραποστολή μας στη Σιέρρα Λεόνε, η Αδελφότητα Ορθοδόξου Εξωτερικής Ιεραποστολής, οι χορηγοί και μεμονωμένοι δωρητές μας από την Ελλάδα, την Αυστραλία, τον Καναδά, τη Ρουμανία, τη Ρωσία και τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, παρακαλούμε, δεχθείτε εκ μέρους όλων των ανθρώπων μας εδώ μια θερμή έκφραση ευγνωμοσύνης. Except for going to church services all the population of Sierra Leone was instructed to stay home during the Christmas and New Year holidays. We are currently under a semi – lockdown mode for the Festive Season. No restaurants, no sporting events, no public celebrations, no wedding receptions, no street celebrations, all shops must close on weekdays by 6.00 PM, by noon of Saturdays and no trading on Sundays . Even church services were restricted – they were to be held during the day and only up to 5.00 PM. New Year Church Service was forbidden. Indeed the army and patrol volunteers are still out in force to ensure these decrees. Violators face the full weight of the law. Add to that list of prohibition, school, college or university attendance.

Why? Are we experiencing some sort of state sponsored anti-Christian campaign? No! Then why these draconian measures during the Holy Festive Season and indeed indefinitely until further notice? The simple yet tragic answer is that this nation is at war again.

Just as ten times before in the last twenty years this nation is at war again through Christmas, New Year, Epiphany and beyond. But this time there are no AK47s or bullets killing innocent people. This time there are no rebel forces invading cities, towns and villages amputating arms and legs indiscriminately. This time the enemy asks no questions, take no prisoners and is totally indiscriminate in its killing spree – babies, toddlers, teenagers, adults and the aged are all living under the shadow of imminent death.

• This is a time without pity.
• This time the enemy is silent, invisible, deadlier.
• This time there can be no truce or treaties. It’s a zero-sum situation.
• This time the enemy is not the Revolutionary United Front amputating limbs!
• This time the enemy is an incurable microscopic virus producing a vicious and deadly haemorrhagic fever!
• This is a time of constant siren wailing ambulances striking macabre fears!
• This time the enemy is called Ebola!

For this reason, the Government decreed that all Christmas and New Year celebrations were to be cancelled in order to avoid the gathering of a crowd of people in enclosed spaces and in that way limiting the risk of body contact – the essential source of Ebola contamination.

When I first heard this new decree my initial instinctive reaction was negative. But then I reconsidered the situation from a purely spiritual perspective. What is the true meaning of Christmas, New Year and Epiphany celebrations? Is it about drunken street dancing? Is it about wild parties? Is it about alcohol or other forms of intoxication? Is it about carousing all night? Or as the habit here in Freetown is to hold night and day street parades by the native so-called “Devil Dancers?”

Perhaps these rigorous measures may be an unintended blessing in disguise. By removing all the unnecessary commercial and unspiritual layers from this Christmas, New Year and Epiphany, Sierra Leone has been given the opportunity – albeit unwillingly, to focus more on family re-unions rather than riotous street parties; to meditate more on the actual meaning of the Bethlehem Event, the arrival of the New Year or Epiphany in a spiritual manner rather than the indigenous “Devil Dancing” street parades. Hence, in the light of the present Ebola infested circumstance hopefully to reflect deeper on issues pertaining to personal physical hygiene and spiritual health. Indeed to supplement these measures the President of Sierra Leone has requested a week of national prayer and fasting during the New Year period in a meta-physical campaign against Ebola.

 

I realize that many of you who are reading this message outside of West Africa also are facing many challenges. We all share an earth of increasing apocalyptic political, economic and environmental and medical uncertainties – deadly incurable epidemics and plagues, wars and monstrous violence, young boys recruited and converted into killing machines, massive refugee displacements, catastrophic bushfires, even the specter of nuclear war is now dimly looming over the horizon in a Cold War II scenario. All these upheavals are threatening our very thin and fragile veneer of global civilization. And as if we are not content with our relentless drive for power and money we irresponsibly pollute our waters and degrade our natural environment endangering the very oxygen we breathe. And as a final nail to our negativity, traditional moral standards and Bible truths are considered outdated by a world obsessed in twisting and proclaiming error as righteousness.

But not all is lost!

We Christians are needed more than ever to proclaim and cling to the eternal and unchanging biblical truths.

• Let try to keep this New Year holy and in obedience to Christ!
• Let us become peace makers.
• Let us also help the less fortunate!
• In other words let us bring back the authentic expression of this Festive Season.

Yesterday one of our mission workers passed away of suspected EBOLA.

Moses, was on leave for a month and had not interacted with Fr Themi for that time, but he was Mary Adams and Eleni McDermott’s personal driver; yes he was one of our people.

He was, and his family still is, one of the poor that God has given us charge over; for whatever we did for (him) one of the least of these brothers and sisters of Jesus, we did for Jesus. (Matt 25:40)

For him, we raised funds for his salary, for him, we sent rice for his wife to feed his family, for him, we built schools to educate his children, for him, we built medical clinics for his families health, for them, we built church’s so that they may know the Creator of all things and the Savior, Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

Often the things we say, the actions we take are seen through a lens of logic or common sense.

A man steals from his employer, he is fired. A man tries to cheat his employer by overcharging on car repairs, is fired. A man arrives to work a little too hung over to drive, is fired. But logical or common sense decisions do not always allow the Holy Spirit to work in the lives of employees. They do not give time for character change and they sometimes shut the door on forgiveness, love, faith and hope.

Such a man as I am describing was our mission driver (and mine and Mary Adams personal driver) in Sierra Leone. A larrikin for sure, an opportunist for sure, an impulsive man for sure. But ….so much more!

A man that loved his family and felt the responsibility to provide for them. He dreamed of moving his wife and 3 children out of their little one bedroom rental, into their own 2 bedroom with a parlour home. A man that showed such humility and appreciation when you gave him eggs to take home to his wife or a text book for one of his children. A man that stubbornly refused to give permission to his wife to continue trading in the market for fear she would get Ebola. A man that never stopped telling me what a good son he had or admiring his daughter’s love for learning, “she is so clever Ms Eleni…. and you know she was baptized and has your name too”. . A man that openly cried when accusations related to his character were spitted at him in a confrontation. A man that was an excellent time keeper, always punctual and with a polite morning greeting for me and whoever else was in my office. A man who would bounce into work on Friday’s, knowing I had breakfast in the college kitchen waiting for him. It was nothing special, just some bread and spread but he always got boyishly excited about it. And finally, a man I caught sitting at the back of the church head bowed in reverence, after a particular conversation we had. Yes there was so much more to this man.

Today, the man that logically should have been fired a year ago from the mission for misdemeanors (and left to his own devices), has been taken from us.

I’m not sure of all the details leading to his death. Moses recently became sick and Fr Themi gave him money for treatment. He was hospitalized a few days ago but like so many that arrive there – he never came out. Now everyone is anxiously waiting for the results to see if it was Ebola, in which case the whole family and the compound will have to be quarantined. In the meantime, health authorities wasted no time in burying him. Ebola or not- a hole was dug and he was put in the ground. No time to arrange a burial service, perhaps not even time for a grave site prayer. No `goodbye Moses’ .

Whilst I take comfort in the fact that Rev Fr Themi will give him a memorial service as soon as possible, I feel we have been deprived (like so many Ebola victims and loved ones) the opportunity to honour him and pay our respects with a funeral.

This afternoon, I am thinking about how Fr Themi did not give up on Moses. He continued to give him a salary even when I left and he was no longer needed as a driver. Time and time again Fr Themi forgave him for his transgressions despite popular opinion that he should be told leave the mission. Perhaps in his wisdom Fr Themi was giving Moses chances to redeem himself. From my experience, every time Moses did the wrong thing, I watched him struggle with denial. But then a kind word or a deed of good to another in the days that followed, showed me that he, (like all of us) was a work in progress. After all, do we not all fall and get back up again, in the struggle to become better human beings? I believe in my heart those times of forgiveness gave Moses the opportunity to become a better man and gave time, for God’s grace and mercy to intervene.

I remember Moses’ catch phrase whenever I asked him to drive me somewhere, deliver something or simply stay close by in case needed ….“I am here for you Ms Eleni anything you need”. Moses, I will not forget your friendship and your loyalty. I will not forget your promise to be there when needed and I hope I can do the same for your children, who I know will struggle now to get an education.

I believe in the hope of life everlasting for you Moses, in a place where there is no pain or sorrow or grieving. May your memory be eternal and you rest in peace and in the knowledge that you were loved and will be missed so much by so many.
