Metropolitan Yona Lwanga kupewa afisa faneli ya serikali. The government of Uganda yesterday through the office of the Vice president announced that His Eminence Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga will be accorded an official state funnel.
The was communicated yesterday 8th September in a meeting with Church leaders and Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi the Minister of ICT and National Guidance who represented the government. He indicated that reflecting on the tremendous service offered by the Metropolitan to this nation including his endless fight for human rights, Truth, and general guidance in national matters as an elder and top leader of the orthodox church, His Eminence ceased to be only a property of the Church but a national icon who undeniably deserves a befitting burial as a National hero.
Therefore, the state will work together with the Church in the send-off of His Eminence. This implies that the government of Uganda will facilitate funding on a number of issues required in the smooth running of the whole arrangements from today 9th September to the time the body of our father will be brought back and as well will facilitate the whole burial arrangements. Others will include Gun salutes, procession with the army accompanying the body of the Metropolitan, this was well explained by Maj Gen George Igumba who accompanied the minister as representative of government on matters regarding security.
The Church however maintained that the traditions and culture of the Orthodox faith will be prioritized during the burial arrangements alongside those above-mentioned activities involved in an official state funnel.
(JUST-IN) With the blessings of His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, Theodoros II, the body of our beloved spiritual father Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga will be laid to rest on Wednesday 15, September 2021 at St. Nicholas Cathedral Namungoona next to the grave of the Late Metropolitan Theodoros Nankyama. This clears the earlier communication which had indicated that the burial ground was at Holy Transfiguration Parish , Ddegeya Luweero District.
The body of our beloved Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga has today been brought to the Parish St Athanasius the Great, the Headquarters of the Patriarchate of Alexandria in Kipseli Athens, Greece. A memorial service was conducted after the holy liturgy and it was presided over by Bishop George of Guinea who also doubles as the Patriarchal representative in Athens. Others present were Bishop Emmanuel of Ptolemeida in Egypt, Bishop Yowanis of Zambia and Mozambique together with Ugandan Clergy in Greece.
