Επισκέπτες στο ορφανοτροφείο του Αγίου Ραφαήλ στη Γουατεμάλα ! News from Hogar Rafael Ayau , Guatemala.

FEBRUARY 09

More iconographers came from New York with Tatiana to continue painting the icons at the church of the Monastery. Visit the interesting website http://www.prosophonschool.org to see the advance being made.

A group of Ohio came to visit and serve the children, leaded by Father Michael Butler and coordinated by Catherine Fuller. They painted the bathrooms in the school and did a wonderful job. They treated the children to an excursion to the Monastery where Father Michael celebrated the Divine Liturgy for the Presentation of the Lord into the Temple, followed by a picnic where the children had their bikes and biked all over the mountain. They also cut lemons and tangerines from the trees and had a long but fun day.

Every Monday of the year we have the civic act, where the children carry the flag, raise it, and chant the national hymn. They also develop a subject about values or just something interesting to learn about. The teams visiting are invited to share this act.

Luis Figueroa, Public Relationist of Universidad Francisco Marroquin came and gave a conference to the older children regarding political systems in the world. He is also a very faithful volunteer of the Hogar, and he regularly comes on Saturdays to serve the little ones at the Nursery.

Paola Ramírez and Sofia Jonnson from Sweden came as volunteers until the end of March to help with the preschoolers.

Tracy Nammee and four more wonderful women of her family came to visit the Hogar and the Monastery for a few days. They also represent the Virginia H. Farah Foundation that has been extremely helpful in the construction of the new site for the children at the Monastery. While here, a group from the American Embassy brought some gifts for the children, like backpacks and many supplies for the school. This was coordinated by Colonel Linda Gould, Commander of the Military Group in Guatemala for the USA Army. We were happy to share with them and thank them for their gifts!

Father Matthias Moriak came for over a week and he confessed the children. He celebrated the Liturgies at the Hogar but also at the Monastery. It is a great joy as he is visiting regularly.

Colegio Guillermo Putzeys brought activities and many snacks for the children for Friendship and Valentine’s day.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Elias Wehbi, his brother Abraham, and two other friends from Canada (Ramzi and Vincent) visited the Hogar and helped with many maintenance projects like cleaning the church domes at the Monastery and making pizzas with the children so they ate and ate and ate… While here, Alexia Chamberas and her yiayia Mrs. Athena visited the Hogar for a week. Now she is yiayia for all of us here at the Hogar. We celebrated the Saturday of the Souls and yiayia made the best kolyva ever!

Father John Chakos arrived for a few days to start us with Holy Lent. The last Saturday of the month, the older children went to the Monastery where Fr. John celebrated the Divine Liturgy. After brunch, they again cut many fruits from the trees (that we always bring back to the Hogar!)

MARCH 09

21/4/2009

The first day of the month, Fr. John Chakos celebrated the Divine Liturgy. After lunch we celebrated Vespers of Forgiveness with Fr. John, nuns, children, volunteers, and staff participating. Creamy ice cream was served at 4 pm as it was Cheese Fare. May the Lord keep us through Great Lent!

___________________________________________________________________________________________

The first week of Lent included long prayers for Matins, Hours, Vespers, and Great Compline with the Canon of Repentance written by St. Andrew of Crete. What a wonderful time this is for everyone attending.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Pat and Ron Moslener from Ellwood City, PA visited for over a week. Pat painted art projects with the children while Ron helped with maintenance.

On March 7th, María Cielo celebrated her 18th birthday. María Isaura Mazariegos treated the older teenagers to celebrate her birthday at Nice Aquarium Restaurant. They were very happy and could not believe the beauty of the tropical aquarium inside the restaurant. Many years to María Cielo, who will continue studying her High School years here at the Hogar.

The first Real Break/OCF team was leaded by Father Jordan Brown. The young eleven students came from many colleges and universities around the United States and Canada. They painted the ceiling and upper walls of the comedor and had much fun with the children, especially the 5 and 6 year old boys. The team invited the older children to Museo Miraflores for an exhibit of tropical fish, snakes, and scientific projects. The children and missionaries enjoyed the outing. A Liturgy of Presanctified Gifts was celebrated by Fr. Jordan at the Monastery.

Dr. Michael Stropes and his wife Dr. Janet Stropes, their two sons, and five students from the School of Dentistry of the University of Indiana arrived to check the children’s and staff’s’ teeth. It was an intense but very productive week. We thank them for all that they did those days!

On March 18th, we celebrated Miriam’s 15th birthday. We had a wonderful start with mariachis at 5 am, and many firecrackers. There was a service in church leaded by Mother Ines, and then a great Lenten luncheon party with mariachis and firecrackers again. The waltz was danced by Miriam and Larry Stropes! It was very special for Miriam to have Mrs. Mary Blakely from Pittsburgh, PA, accompanying her this day (she just came for two days). The dress, adornments, shoes, and the party was offered by Meredith Hinshelwood (our former long term missionary from Florida) and Mary Blakely. The cake was offered by a family of volunteers from Guatemala, the Aguilar family. Thank you so much for making such a wonderful and unforgettable day for Miriam!

The second Real Break/OCF team was leaded by Father Apostolos Hill. Six students came in this team. They painted the side walls of the comedor in a nice and fresh mint green, and the eastern outer wall of the church. One of the mornings of their stay, visited the Monastery. On the day of the Annunciation, Father Apostolos celebrated the Vesperal Liturgy for the Feast day! Mother Ines sent many fish from the Monastery and the children enjoyed their fried fish very much. It always tastes great and so much better when is Holy Lent!
