Welcome to the 6:8 Update!

«The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.» (Luke 4:18-19)

What is the purpose of my existence? This question lingers in the minds of college students as we seek to choose the vocational path to which God has called us, whether it comes to choosing a career, a spouse, or any other major life choice. However, before we consider these questions about each of our individual vocations, we need to reflect on God’s communal vocation for all of humanity.

Christ sums up this communal vocation when He is asked which of the commandments is the greatest: Jesus said to him, «‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophet s» (Matthew 22:37-40).

Before we even begin to think about what career God is calling us to, where we should live, or who we should marry, we must reflect first and foremost on this great commandment of Christ to love God with all of our being and our neighbor as ourselves.

Loving our neighbor is especially actualized in how we treat the poor. This is emphasized in Christ’s parable of the Good Samaritan.

College students are challenged daily to achieve great things for themselves. Our lives are consumed with pressures to perform well in class, to adequately prepare for whatever careers await us upon graduation, as well as social pressures from friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc.

OCF wants to challenge you in a different way. We want to challenge you to achieve great things for others. We want to challenge you to do great things for the poor. We want to present you with the 6:8 Challenge.

What It Is

6:8 Challenge is an opportunity for every local OCF chapter to reach outside of themselves and serve the poor among us. And what better way to challenge people than to turn it into a competition! Therefore, we have devised a point system to award your efforts to serve the poor and bring greater awareness to global poverty and injustice. The competition will take place through May 1, 2009, at which time we will announce the top three OCF chapters with the most points accumulated.

How It Works
Check out the point system on our website ( http://www.ocf.net/groups/68_challenge/default.aspx ). For every action your OCF performs you are able to receive the corresponding points on the list. Upon performing each action, post it on the 6:8 Challenge OCF/Facebook page. The points will automatically be added to your chapter account. To verify each action, simply post a photo, link, or video (whichever is required) to chapter page. On May 1, 2009, the points will be added up, and the top three chapters will receive their rewards.

What You’ll Get

It just wouldn’t be right to award self-gratifying prizes in a competition like this. Therefore, for the top three OCF chapters in this challenge, we will reward you by offering you the opportunity to learn more about responding to poverty and injustice by helping to pay your way to the 1st annual Pilgrimage for Justice on June 5 – 8, 2009 at the Antiochian Village. This unconventional conference will allow you to experience the challenges of poverty first-hand and equip you to reach out to our suffering world with the love of Christ.

First Prize – Up to $1,000 toward your OCF attending the Pilgrimage for Justice.

Second Prize – Up to $750 toward your OCF attending the Pilgrimage for Justice.

Third Prize – Up to $500 toward your OCF attending the Pilgrimage for Justice.
