DECEMBER 2008

What a beautiful month it was, with many activities reminding us of the blessed coming of Christ to us. The Hogar celebrated the traditional «posadas» for nine days before the Nativity, where the children carry a procession representing the Theotokos and blessed Joseph looking for an in a typical food is served each day. The different groups of children arranged beautiful Christmas trees in their areas and served the special snacks for the «posadas».

The Pittsburgh team leaded by Father John Chakos and Presbytera Sandy arrived and were accompanied by many beautiful ladies from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church. Our dear Joanne Lamprinakos taught the children more about watercolors, they even visited the Ixchel Museum for Guatemalan textiles. Later that day Joanne and some of the ladies treated the children to eat at Burguer King at the campus of Galileo University. After they visited Mr. Luis Figueroa, the Public Relationist of Universidad Francisco Marroquín. He gave a tour of the University, including the magnificent library. The children and missionaries were able to appreciate the first Encyclopedia published in 1783 as a special edition for Spain, written in French, and many ancient books and documents. On the way out they fed the fish in the beautiful ponds outside the library. Dr. Christal Chaney, Director of Theos Orthodox School went for a visit to the Ministry of Education as some errands had to be made there by personnel from the Hogar it was interesting to know some of the facts and statistics of education for children in the country. On Saint Nicholas day, Father John celebrated the Divine Liturgy. When bringing the children to Holy Communion, some of the nice ladies like Cynthia and Demetria, offered to take our baby Sergio Valaam to Pittsburgh, so his eyes could be examined. All the legal procedures were followed so this could take place as it did. (Please read more about what has happened and is happening to Sergio in our homepage!)

Our dear parishioner Irina Darlee slept in the Lord on December 9th. Father John and the nuns chanted a Trisagion at the wake. Father John left one day later than the team in order to celebrate the funeral service and the service at the cemetery, where some on the older children also attended. A few days before her departure to the Lord, she accompanied the Russian Ambassador Mr. Nikolai Vladimir to a visit to the Monastery where Mother Ines and Mother Maria shared with them. We thank her for all that she did for us and for the culture of our country. Memory eternal to Irina!

On the 10th, Guadalupe turned 21 years old! May she lived a blessed and peaceful life as an adult. Reina also turned 21 years old in November, she is working at the Hogar helping with publications.

Several Christmas parties were kindly given to the children. We appreciate the love and support these institutions gave us. The Teffel Foundation gave a beautiful party with a Santa Claus giving presents to each child and lots of «Pollo Campero». Mrs. Karla Fonseca and group of family and friends brought food and presents for the children too. Some students of Biological Chemistry, and some lawyers of Universidad de San Carlos also brought gifts, food, and games for the children. Jonni Batch and his group called «Jóvenes en Acción» brought a musical group singing Christmas carrolls. Ricardo Sommerkamp and a group of friends brought happy meals for the children.

Some of the children from AkTenamit came to be with the nuns for the Nativity celebrations. Jose Manuel and Jorge Luis came to celebrate and they stayed at the Monastery with the nuns and the other teenagers (Mauro, Edgar, Cristian, and Christofer). Jember was also there as he is ready to move on with the older boys.

One night, «Pollo Campero» gives to the Guatemalan citizens an extraordinary evening. Thirty minutes of incredible firelights. Ricardo Sommerkamp invited the older children (many of them teenagers), to his apartment near to the park where they set up the show. The lights were so close to their faces producing this special effect. It will be a night to be remembered.

The staff had a special day when the children celebrated the yolka, had special music presentations, and later on served them a typical lunch (tamal, sweet bread, and hot fruit punch), plus a Christmas gift. All the staff enjoyed and was grateful. Thank God for these people who love our children so much!

Father Chad Hatfield, Chancellor of Saint Vladimir’s Seminary in Crestwood, New York arrived for a week. He celebrated the Liturgies for the Nativity season. It was wonderful to have a priest for these very special days in our lives and the Liturgical year. After the Divine Liturgy on the day of the Nativity, there was a big luncheon for the children with lots of food and candies. Later that day, Santa Claus brought a huge bag of presents to each child. New clothes, items for personal hygiene, toys, stuffed animals, and so many things brought by the teams of missionaries along the year. The children were so happy!

The iconographers painting the church at the Monastery went back to Russia. Tatiana with some other iconographers fom the Prosopon School will return at the beginning of February to continue with the iconography.

At the end of the month, our dear Maria Jessica Abdallah came for two weeks. It was a joy to have her among us. She was here to celebrate the end of the year and also accompany us on a trip to Lake Atitlan, where Dr. Margarita de Ramírez and family invited us to spend a beautiful day. On the 31st we went to church, had a special dinner at 8 pm and then waited until midnight to burn firecrackers and watch the firelights in the city from our park.

We thank the Lord for giving us such a beautiful 2008. We thank the Lord for each person that comes to the Hogar with so much love and willing to make our children better and happier persons. We thank all Orthodox parishes, priests, missionaries, volunteers, and donors who make possible the daily miracle that we live at Hogar Rafael Ayau. No doubt: BIG IS GOD!!! May each one of you have a blessed 2009! Our prayers for all of you.

JANUARY 09
May all the kind people who visit our website have a blessed and peaceful 2009!

The first team of the year arrived on the first day, the team from Minnesota leaded by Father Bob McMeekin and Doria Saros. They took care of the children with multiple fun activities as they had vacation from school for the Holy Days of Christmas and New Year. It was wonderful to share with them the services and Liturgies for the feast of Theophany. The Hogar and the Monastery were blessed, and we celebrated the Blessing of Lake Amatitlán. Cristian brought out the Cross from the lake for the fourth consecutive time. Father Bob also blessed many businesses and homes of the parishioners. Angie Speliopoulos treated the children to have «Pollo Campero» in honor of Clara who will be 15 years old in May, everyone enjoyed very much, including the team!

Our little one, Anthony Gabriel turned 5 years old on the day of Theophany, many blessed years!

Karissa Margoulis visited with her mother. She was adopted nine years ago and live in Australia since then. It was a blessing to have them here at the Hogar.

The Roach family was very happy as the adoption of Anabelly and Keilyn finally concluded. Father Bob gave them a special blessing before leaving the Hogar. May they have a blessed family life!

Jorge invited his sister nun Mother Ivonne and the older teenagers to his home to celebrate the beginning of the new year. A wonderful meal was prepared by Maria Ofelia, Jorge’s wife.

The American Embassy gave the HUMANITARIAN VISA to our baby Sergio Valaam so he could go to Pittsburgh. Mother Ines and Mother Maria traveled with Sergio on the 12th, being sponsored by the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church (Father John Chakos) and their Philoptochos Chapter. It was a wonderful sight to see both nuns with the baby and the many things they were carrying with them (baby carriage, baby seat, blankets, diapers, bottles, milk, etcetera!) Just enjoy the photographs… (To follow up what has happened to Sergio, please check the special news about him on this same webpage.) We thank all the kind people and medical personnel who have taken care of our baby! This was a great opportunity for Mother Ines and Mother Maria to spend some time at our Mother Monastery in Ellwood City with Mother Abbess Christophora and all the nuns there.

Our teenagers boys left for Ak Tenamit to start the school year. They were so happy! Guess who the happiest was? Yes, Jember! Mauro, Edgar, Cristian, Cristofer, Jember, Jorge Luis, and Jose Manuel traveled with Steven Dudenhoffer (Founder and Chairman) to Rio Dulce. Some of the older boys are also living there, they are Alexander, David, and Luis Alfredo. May they have a wonderful year in that tropical paradise. If you want to write to them, please do so and send your postal mail directly to our Hogar address in Guatemala City. If you wish to know more about Ak Tenamit please visit their website at http://www.aktenamit.org and enjoy.

The older teenagers, with their high school tutor, visited a park called «Los Aposentos» and Antigua for one day. There is a small lake in «Los Aposentos», so they rented water bicycles and row boats. It was a great experience to learn how to row a boat! Row, row, row your boat…

Pedro Pablo, our physical education teacher moved forward as he got a very good job in the city. We thank him for five years of beautiful work with the children and for being a good example for all of them.

The team from Sacramento, California arrived on the 20th leaded by Father James Retelas and Andrew Burrows. Antonio Avialotis came from Oregon and joined the team once more. These missionaries are incredible with their skills for maintenance. They trimmed many more trees at the Hogar, especially the ones that had branches hanging towards the streets. They power washed many walls and cleaned, cleaned, cleaned. They took the group of preschoolers and prep-schoolers to the Zoo and Pollo Campero. The older children were treated to the Train Museum and Dominos Pizza. Thank you missionaries!

Silvia turned 17 years old! We had a simple celebration at the comedor with a Lenten meal as it was on a Friday. The subject of the celebration: High School Musical, of course. The girls danced with Andrew and Antonio! It is wonderful to have good, devout, Orthodox Christian men visiting the Hogar, as it is so healing for the girls.

The children went to the Numismatic Museum/Bank of Guatemala, guided by its Director, Mr. Roberto Brol. They were very interested to learn the development of money in the country. The children have learned the value of money through their personal bank accounts. All the art work and prayer ropes they make have a value, and they receive money for their work. They give their monthly tithe to the church and the rest is deposited to their accounts. They use their money by going to the bank and buying their personal items, and therefore have learned to take care of it. Basic learning: quetzales (our national bird and bills), do fly!

We thank all the donors and volunteers coming to the Hogar, especially Karla Chang who brought many books and things useful for the children and the two special systems for printing that will be very useful too.

The National Association of Municipalities brought 100 delicious dinners on the 30th, a feast of the Monastery!

On the day of the three great Hierarchs, fifteen years ago, the nuns started to live in the beautiful mountain of Lake Amatitlan where our Monastery of the Holy Trinity- Lavra Mambre -is located. Big is God!

The last day of the month, a group of children went to the Monastery and shared with the nuns a nice walk to the construction site of the hogar being built there. They also had their bikes with them, so it was a fun trip. The building has advanced in many ways. We thank all the people and institutions that have donated towards this project.

What a beautiful first month of the year! Full of miracles and kindness. We thank the Lord for all of you, thank you for helping shape better lives in these little children of God. Our prayers for you all.
